Our History

Welcome to Thomas Davis Funeral Directors, where tradition meets compassion in the heart of our community. Established in 1840, Thomas Davis Funeral Directors predates some of the most iconic landmarks and innovations we hold dear today. Imagine this: when we first opened our doors, the majestic Clifton Suspension Bridge was still a vision in Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s mind, and the concept of sliced bread was as novel as the idea of a horseless carriage.

For over 180 years, we have been a source of comfort and support, guiding families through their most challenging times with grace and dignity. Our longevity isn't just a testament to our enduring quality of service, but also to the trust and confidence placed in us by generations of families.

We blend classic traditions with modern sensitivities to provide services that are as unique as the individuals we honour. From personlised ceremonies to memorial services that capture the essence of your loved one, our dedicated team ensures every detail is handled with the utmost care and respect.

At Thomas Davis Funeral Directors, our history is interwoven with the stories of countless lives we've helped celebrate and remember. We stand as a pillar in the community, offering unwavering support and compassionate guidance. As we continue our journey, we're honored to be a part of yours, ensuring that every farewell is as meaningful and special as the legacy left behind.

The Davis family, renowned for their long-standing heritage and impeccable service, faced a critical juncture with no clear successor to lead their family business. Determined to preserve the essence and values that had been defined for generations, the Davis family made the strategic decision to pass the torch to the Alderwick family. Through a long-standing friendship and recognising the Alderwicks' shared commitment to quality and family-oriented principles, they found in them the perfect custodians to continue their legacy.

This transition was more than a mere business transaction; it was a safeguard against the looming threat of a corporate takeover. By entrusting their life's work to another family-operated entity, the Davis family ensured that the business would remain true to its roots. The Alderwick family, honored by this responsibility, pledged to uphold the Davis family's standards and traditions. Through this thoughtful succession, the business not only remained within a family-operated framework but also avoided the impersonal nature of corporate ownership, ensuring that the Davis family's values and vision would thrive for generations to come.

The business is now headed by principal directors Mr. Philip Alderwick and his brother-in - law Mr. Derek Gunningham, both assisted by their wives. Both have a long history in the funeral service sector as a third generation, with close to 100 years of experience between them. A management structure has been formed in the business consisting of the fourth generation.
